The stunning Spanish town of San Pedro de Alcántara benefits from an ideal location on the Costa del Sol. Just moments drive from the glitz and glam, hustle and bustle, and famously international town of Marbella, San Pedro has retained its traditional Spanish charm.
An ancient farming community famous for its sugarcane, this elegant pueblo is just moments from the natural beauty of the Sierra de Ronda mountain range. It’s 20 kilometres (12.5 miles) to the East of Estepona, a town famous for its stunning gardens and traditional Andalusian architecture.
Without a doubt, San Pedro de Alcántara is one of the few towns remaining unspoilt on the Costa del Sol. The charming, kind locals welcome people from all walks of life to their beautiful community, whether just for a visit or planning on relocating to enjoy an Andalusian lifestyle.
San Pedro de Alcántara: Home of the Most Iconic Boulevard on the Costa del Sol
One of the first things one will notice when driving into San Pedro de Alcántara is the iconic and unique boulevard. The distinctive road has been built over the coastal highway that passes through a tunnel under the town. Since its opening in December 2014, the park covering the boulevard and its unique footbridge have become popular features and the symbol of San Pedro.
The 300-metre bridge passes over the main roundabout on the boulevard, connecting the two areas on either side. It was designed by local San Pedro arquitect, Juan Antonio Fernández, who named it “Un Mar de Sensaciones”, translating to “A Sea of Sensations” in English. As the name suggests, the bridge’s design was inspired by the sea and is distinguished by the waves.
Construction work for the boulevard’s underpass began in 2006, taking five years to complete. The area was previously known and avoided for two sets of traffic lights that caused long queues, especially during the busy summer months. The finished 2 kilometre (1.25 mile) underpass not only transformed the A-7 coastal road, but the following 16-month construction work of the boulevard gave San Pedro de Alcántara a monumental makeover. The boulevard also united two distinctive sides of the town: the beach side and the town side, previous separated by the motorway.
Designed with families in mind, the boulevard is paradise for young children, with several play areas, parks and places to explore. There are a total of six playgrounds, each of which is vastly different. They are well-maintained and include a wide variety of obstacles and play areas for children of all ages. The boulevard is a family-favourite in San Pedro and is often busy with families on the weekends and evenings.
Popular with walkers, the boulevard has a cycle lane which is often occupied by scooters, rollerblades and bikes. Under the bridge, you can also find Segways for hire.
There is an outdoor amphitheatre which hosts live performances and concerts, especially during ferias. The boulevard is a popular entertainment spot with bars and restaurants, many of which offer outdoor seating, fantastic for enjoying a meal al-fresco or nearby entertainment.
The boulevard has public toilets that are always clean. The boulevard as a whole is maintained to an extremely high standard by a team of council workers, who can often be seen in the early morning tending to the gardens and cleaning the area for the day’s visitors. They often keep presence throughout the day to ensure the boulevard is kept clean and safe.
